Joy in the Time of COVID: Rain

Yesterday morning I woke up to one of my favorite sounds: that of a good soaking rain. Thankfully, my husband had closed the windows earlier, and, because of Covid, I had nowhere to be, so I could just snuggle down in the warm covers. There are few things that give me more delight than a good rain, especially when I am safe in my house. In fact, I get happy just writing about it.

I realize this love for the sound of rain may not be universal. I think of the farmer who, once again, cannot go out to plow their field. Or the areas of the world that experience constant flooding. Or the person who lives in Seattle, where it always seems to be raining.

An especially delightful place to listen to rain: while sleeping in a tent. But, alas, that pleasure is dashed when it comes time to pack up that heavy pile of wet fabric. What a mess.

My life is not at all disrupted by rainfall, except perhaps when trying to get the dog outside to do his business. Add to that the fact that I can cross “water the plants” off my list of things to do, well, rain is indeed a welcome sight and sound.

I wonder, am I alone in this – the near giddy feeling I get when the forecast promises rain, with a little thunder and lightning thrown in?

This week’s delight: rain. And the added bonus that because of Covid, I can stop and listen to that delightfully steady stream of water hitting my windows, without having anywhere I need to be but home.
