It never fails to happen: you’re visiting a new city and taking in all its splendors. Then reality slaps you in the face – a homeless person sitting on the sidewalk, causing you to take a wide detour around them, while continuing to take in the beautiful sights of the city.
It’s a sad reality. This country has way too many people who are going hungry. The homeless and the working poor.
John and I are living in St. Augustine, Florida for the month of February. It is a fabulous city, with a remarkable history, wonderful restaurants, and, best of all, warm weather. But, of course, there is a sizeable homeless population.
It says something about the generosity of the citizens of St. Augustine to learn that a large group of churches and nonprofits join together to form “Dining with Dignity”, a program that provides meals for the homeless every single night. John and I have been attending one of these churches, Trinity Parish, an Episcopal church we have really enjoyed. Trinity’s assigned night is the last Sunday of every month.
I saw an opportunity for kindness, and I took it. I signed up to join this group! We cooked up chicken, potatoes, vegetables, etc. and packed them up in individual containers. We also packed up portable meals for the next day – a sandwich, orange, and granola bar.
After preparation, we went to the parking lot where the meals are distributed. At least 50 people were lined up to eat. I was so honored to be able to smile and greet and hand a meal to another child of God.
I know this is the proverbial “drop in the bucket” in solving the needs of the poor. But I believe, at least I hope, that small acts of kindness multiply.
I am so appreciative that this church group welcomed this “out-of-towner” with open arms. That is a wonderful act of kindness to welcome a stranger into your comfortable group. I appreciate the kindness the diners showed me. There is a humility that comes with letting others serve you in your time of need.
I am thankful for my “365 Days of Kindness” group on Facebook for encouraging me to seek out ways to show kindness.
Finally, I pray for more opportunities for all of us to show kindness to those in need.
