Finding joy in the time of COVID: games

My husband, John, and I love to play board games. And of course, COVID quarantine has put that love to the test. I mean, games are no longer, “We haven’t seen the Smiths for a while, lets invite them for dinner and games.” No, now games are just between the two of us, which is just fine. One can only watch Netflix for so many hours.

We have played all the usual: “Rack-o”, “Kings in the Corner”, “Spades”, “Gin Rummy”. I even bought a book called, “Super Fun Family Card Games”, and we really have learned some new ones.

The last time we were able to go out for dinner, (and wasn’t that a long time ago?), we saw a couple playing a card game while waiting for their order to arrive. It’s called “Monopoly Deal” – a game which is based on Monopoly, but much MUCH quicker. I had forgotten how much we had enjoyed playing it in the past. When we got home, I dug it out and we proceeded to relearn the rules. John suggested we start keeping track of wins, which we did, starting on November 10, 2020, the year of our COVID. At this point we are neck and neck. That is, John has won 21 games, and Martha has won 21 games. We’re either equally good or equally bad. I have started dropping hints that I am a little sick of this game, but John insists we finish the year with it. So, today, New Year’s Eve, we finish our last round of “Monopoly Deal”.

It has been a joy to play cards and board games with my husband, and to have an ongoing tournament of sorts. And it will be a real joy to decide what we go into 2021 playing. COVID may be around for a while. Good thing the possibility of games is endless.
