Finding Joy in the time of COVID: Snowbird

I hesitate to write this on the eve of the huge polar vortex slated to arrive in Minnesota this weekend. We’ve been shivering under our blankets in anticipation for months now – just waiting for the big blast to hit. Remind me, just why do we live in Minnesota? Ah, yes – the promise of spring.

I do not suffer graciously in this weather. Hard as I try, I just do not like it. Our dog, Chester, may he rest in peace, loved going on walks, even when he had to attempt to walk down sidewalks covered in snow taller than his little body. Each day, we strapped on his little red dog booties and, after patiently waiting for mom to don layer upon layer of Thinsulate, off we trudged. I never enjoyed those walks, ever. I am so pleased to say that our current dog, Dodger, has an attitude of “meh” when I pull out the leash and ask if he wants to go on a walk. He really could care less, which suits me just fine when the temps dip and the snow falls.

All of which is my attempt to explain to you why, on the cusp of this awful weather, I am writing to you from Florida. Yup, John and I packed our bags (and our dog) and drove down to Florida. We figured during this time of COVID, our life of puzzles, books, virtual worship, games, television, and online lectures could just as easily be spent in just about any place other than Minnesota. So, we’re here – it is certainly not beach weather where we are (I always make sure to tell my friends that because, frankly, it would be downright cruel to tell them otherwise). Honestly, the temps yesterday required me to wear a jacket, hat, and gloves and Dodger and I went on our walk. But the point was, I could walk without fear of frostbite or ending up flat on my back on an ice patch.

So, this month (and next month’s) delight is being able to get outside. No ice to worry about and lots of sunshine. Even Dodger is enthusiastic about getting out on a leash. I am feeling grateful, if somewhat apologetic.

So, I’ll keep looking for joy in the time of COVID. And I promise not to make it all about sunshine and warm weather.
